Volunteers Clean Up Sloan Canyon National
Conservation Area
On March 3, 2007 Don’t Trash
Nevada
and students from a UNLV
Environmental Studies course cleaned up an area in the Sloan Canyon National
Conservation Area. The volunteers spent three hours removing 20 cubic yards of
waste -- waste that should not have been there in the first place since the
area is closed to shooting. The site was littered with illegally dumped
materials used for target shooting and contained thousands of clay pigeon
pieces. Perhaps most disturbing was the number of unspent rounds the volunteers
found in the area.
Students spread out to remove target shooting trash. If the people who made this mess had been caught, they could have been fined.
Volunteers come in all sizes. Noah is the six-year-old son of a volunteer. He is learning a valuable lesson about stewardship and to pack out what he packs in. It’s a simple lesson not learned by those who trashed this area.
Volunteers take a break after a hard day’s work.
A photograph doesn't adequately show just how much trash was on site. However, this photograph does give you an idea.
